I hope you can join me on The Edge On Folk from 8am to noon today. It's on CiTR 101.9 fm and Cable fm 101.9 in the Lower Mainland. It's also streamed live on www.citr.ca. Podcasts will be available later in the day as well. Lots of new releases, including exclusive Canadian previews of the new Bellowhead CD, the new Lila Downs CD, and some brand new music from Zimbabwe's Chiwoniso Maraire (daughter of Dumi, the man who introduced marimbas to Seattle when he was teaching at U of Washington), Persian sensations Niyaz, the new Joan Baez CD, and loads more.
Radio Rogue is now broadcasting a brand new playlist of hundreds of songs you won't hear anywhere else - not even on the new CBC Radio 2! The instructions are on the home page.
Fraser Union, The Shirleys, and Just Duets are performing at St. James Hall on Saturday September 20th. It's a fundraiser entitled "Taking A Stand On Housing", and is intended to raise awareness of the lack of social housing in Vancouver - and doing something about it, too. Tickets are on sale at the door.
Willie & The Locos
I'll play a couple of tracks from a recent concert by the quartet on The Edge On Folk today. Fans of Willie & Lobo and their gypsy boogaloo music won't want to miss the concert next Friday night, September 26th, at St. James Hall, 3214 West 10th Avenue. Willie Royal is a fiddler with a unique musical groove, and his previous shows at the Rogue have all been packed. The new band is stellar, and more than makes up for Lobo's absence. The guitar, bass & percussion add a funky African backbeat and some tasty solos to the heady mix. Tickets are still on sale at Highlife Records, Rufus' Guitar Shop, and online. Concert details.
Fiamma Fumana and the Rice Weeders Choir
This Italian extravaganza plays October 1st at the Italian Cultural Centre, 12th & Slocan, just east of Nanaimo St. Rogue Folk members get a $5 discount / rebate at the door. Details on www.caravanworld.homestead.com.
Have a great weekend!
