Daughters of Donbas is a contemporary acoustic project rooted in emotional and narrative depth. Blending elements of art-folk, chamber songwriting, and Ukrainian folk vocal traditions, the music moves between original compositions and reimagined fragments of folk.
Songs of Stolen Children is a music/ human rights project addressing the ~20,000 Ukrainian children that have been abducted from occupied regions in Eastern Ukraine and taken to Russia. It's led by Ukrainian-Canadian singer Marichka, winner of the Amnesty International Prize, and former lead signer of Lemon Bucket Orchestra and Balaklava Blues, in collaboration with Grammy-nominated producer and award-winning journalist, Dan Rosenberg.
Marichka worked as an embedded war correspondent in Donbas, met with families affected by war crime, and the horrors stolen children have experienced in filtration an re-education camps.
Featured is Marichka, Alina Kuzma, Zoe Santo and others. While some songs echo ancient textures, others are stripped to voice and silence — fragile, direct, and raw. There is no electronics, no overproduction — only acoustic instruments, space, and truth.
The project is grounded in real stories — especially those of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia during the full-scale invasion. Each song bears witness to a stolen name, a stolen childhood, a silenced voice.
The group is recording a full length album that is due out soon, and the project has already been featured on BBC World Service (audio archive here), NPR, German Public Radio, Norwegian National Radio, a 29-minute report on Polish National Radio, and features on several CBC programs (Fresh Air, In Concert, Frequencies) plus a live report for CBC Television from Kyiv.
