Keep in Touch

There are two ways you can receive these updates automatically:

1. Ellis Paul and Radoslav Lorkovic, Thursday May 24th, 8pm, at St. James Hall (3214 West 10th Avenue)

American singer songwriter Ellis Paul makes his Rogue debut this week, and we think it's going to be a memorable debut! Ellis has been making albums for 25 years, and has a new CD in the works. He is an accomplished songwriter, with songs featured in movies like Shallow HalMe Myself & IreneHall Pass; and more. He designs and illustrates his own album covers, and is an acclaimed author of children's books, and penned a remarkable journal about the life of a touring singer songwriter - Notes From The Road. He teaches at workshops, schools, and musical retreats, and the day after this gig embarks on a week long Celebrity Cruise to Alaska, where he will stage several private concerts, workshops and more for a dedicated group of followers, many of whom will be at the Rogue show. I was blown away by his set at Folk Alliance a couple of years ago, and we are delighted to be able to bring him to The Rogue this week! You can read more about him, but witnessing one of his concerts is infinitely more fulfilling and enjoyable so why not come on down to The Rogue?

Another excellent reason to attend this show is the chance to hear the amazing Croatian pianist and accordionist Radoslav Lorkovic, who will accompany Ellis. Rad is such a versatile musician, and his performances are renowned for musical brilliance and an irrepressible joie de vivre. He toured for many years with the late Jimmy LaFave and has played with all the major luminaries of the Americana scene.

4. Mission Folk Music Festival Ticket Deal For Rogues!

The Mission Folk Festival runs July 20th - 22nd in Fraser River Heritage Park, 80 km east of Vancouver, just up the hill off Hwy 7. The event began in 1988, and it has long been regarded as one of B.C.'s most enjoyable festivals. They had a tough time with weather a few years in a row, and were within a whisker of having to fold, but they refused to give up and are coming back stronger each year. This year's line up has yet to be finalized, but will include James Keelaghan, The Small Glories (above), Elage Diouf, and many more. Rogue Folk Club members will receive a special discount deal, and you can find all the details here.

5. Vancouver Folk Music Festival tickets
Many Rogue Folk Club members purchased their VFMF tickets through us. You can pick them up at our office on Granville Island (1504 Duranleau Street) by appointment only. Cal 604-732-1305 or email roguefolk@telus.net to confirm your time of arrival and to make sure there is someone there! You could also pick them up at a Rogue concert. You will not be able to pick them up at the festival gate, so make sure you get them beforehand.

6. Radio Waves
On this week's show I'll have new music by the likes of Ry Cooder, Angelique Kidjo, Kiran Ahluwalia, Fatoumata Diawara, Birds of Chicago, Loreena McKennitt, plus lots of old(er) favourites. I hope you can tune in on Saturday from 8am to noon on CiTR fm 101.9 or on the live stream. The next two shows will be hosted by Paul Norton and by Andrea & Arthur Berman. I'll be back in the chair on June 16th.

7. North Shore Jazz

I recommend two shows at the Blueshore Financial Stage at Capilano University: Eilen Jewell (above) and her fine band on June 26th, and David Hidalgo (Los Lobos) & Marc Ribot (Tom Waits band) on June 28th. There are other excellent shows coming up there, so check out the details

8. TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival presents The Jerry Douglas Band (plus Steve Dawson's Lucky Hand Band) Vogue Theatre, Saturday June 30, 8PM

Legendary dobro/lap steel player and vocalist Jerry Douglas has a whopping 14 Grammy Awards to his credit. His next-level mastery can be heard in O Brother Where Art Thou? and in collaborations with Béla Fleck, Alison Krauss and Union Station, and The Earls of Leicester. An outright virtuoso, Douglas has absorbed and transcended the conventions of bluegrass, country, jazz, blues, and rock. His bold new music is cinematic and stunningly detailed, hitting on an artful chamber Americana sound beyond the boundaries of anything he—or anyone else—has done before.
