Keep in Touch

There are two ways you can receive these updates automatically:

1. The Unfaithful Servants with Shari Ulrich, Thursday September 25th, 8pm, at Mel Lehan Hall at St. James (3214 West 10th Avenue)

The superb string quartet The Unfaithful Servants from Vancouver Island team up with Ms. Shari Ulrich for another amazing evening of BC roots music at The Rogue! The band performed at The Rogue in 2024 and members of the band also played a memorable tribute to The Band at the Wise Hall earlier this year. Dylan Stone (guitar & vocals) is a brilliant frontman, with incredible support from Grammy-winning bluegrass mandolinist Jesse Cobb (formerly of The Infamous Stringdusters before he moved north to Victoria) plus the amazing youngster Quinn Etheridge-Pedden on fiddle, and bassist Mark Johnson. A while back Dylan asked Ms. Shari if they could record one of her songs. Being the irrepressible musical explorer that she is, she suggested they get together to work on that song and others. The result is a joint tour of BC and Alberta over the next few weeks, starting at The Rogue!

Ms. Shari of course is 1/3 of the pioneering folk band Pied Pumkin and was also a member of Valdy's Hometown Bandbefore embarking on a marvellous career as a solo artist and avid accompanist to a plethora of artists including Karen Savoca, John McCutcheon, Oliver Schroer and many more. Ms. Shari has also hosted Songbird North for the past two decades. She is a fabulous singer and songwriter and multi-instrumentalist (on fiddle, mandolin, guitar, piano, and flute).

The Unfaithful Servants are just about to release their second CD, Fallen Angel. It's brilliant! I am really looking forward to this show, folks. If you love bluegrass, jam bands, great singing and stunning musicianship, you really should not miss this concert!

2. John Doyle, Thursday October 2nd, 8pm, at Mel Lehan Hall at St. James (3214 West 10th Avenue)

Another truly exciting evening comes up next week, with Ireland's most celebrated guitarist and one of her finest singers and songwriters too! John Doyle stands as one of the most influential figures in Irish music, with his signature guitar style, songwriting, and voice shaping the sound of countless legendary artists and ensembles including Solas, Liz Carroll, Eileen Ivers, Karan Casey, Joan Baez, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Usher’s Island. From his early days in Dublin to co-founding the groundbreaking group Solas and performing on world stages, Doyle has become a defining force in contemporary folk and Celtic music. Equally acclaimed as a collaborator and songwriter, his work—whether with icons of Irish tradition or Americana greats—has earned Grammy recognition, international awards, and praise for songs that weave powerful stories of the Irish emigrant experience. Trad Connect notes: “It is not often that a single artist defines a genre, but then there is John Doyle and traditional Irish (guitar) music to consider.”

3. Little Miss Higgins, Sunday October 5th, 8pm, at Mel Lehan Hall at St. James (3214 West 10th Avenue)

"a sexy jazz cabaret voice which is almost more at home in the 1920s than it is today, yet is still timeless." - L.A. Beat.

Little Miss Higgins brings over two decades of stagecraft, songwriting, and touring to the Harvest Tour, blending early country blues, jazz, and folk into a captivating live experience. A three-time Western Canadian Music Award winner with Junoand Maple Blues nominations, Higgins draws inspiration from legends like Memphis Minnie, Billie Holiday, Joni Mitchell, and Dolly Parton, as well as her fellow Canadian musicians. Known for her sultry, timeless voice and engaging stage presence, she pairs her music with a unique traveling market vibe—featuring homegrown garlic, handmade soap, and more—making each show a celebration of music, story, and harvest bounty.

It's been too long since Jolene played in Vancouver. Her last Rogue concert was way back in 2017, and she also performed here in 2013 and 2010. Come along and help us to welcome her back. You will have a ball, I guarantee you!

4. The Lee Boys, Saturday October 11th, 8pm, at Mel Lehan Hall at St. James (3214 West 10th Avenue)

This will be our first experience at The Rogue of the exhilarating sounds of sacred steel, combining R&B, Blues and Gospel into a compelling sound with immense soul and groove.

Founded by Alvin Lee, the band brings joyous, high-energy performances that invite dancing, shouting, and celebration, making each show an unforgettable experience. 5. Radio Waves

I hope you will tune me in and turn me on again this Saturday from 8am to 12 noon on The Saturday Edge On Folk on www.citr.ca and fm 101.9 in Vancouver. This week I will pay tribute to the incredible bassist Danny Thompson who passed away on Wednesday after 6 decades as one of the world's most popular bass players in folk, blues, jazz, and world music. The word "legend" is often bandied about indiscriminately, but in his case it hardly begins to describe his contribution to bands like Pentangle, Ketama, and Richard Thompson (no relation).

I will also play songs which illuminated (in my head, at least) our recent cruise from London to Bergen via DublinLiverpoolBelfastOrkneyAberdeen, and Shetland amongst other places. A trip which ended up at the Tonder Festival in Denmark.

Tune in to hear all this and a bunch of new releases and concert previews, too.
