Keep in Touch

There are two ways you can receive these updates automatically:

1. AGM notice; Thursday September 18th, from 6pm to 645pm in Room 120, downstairs at the back of the Mel Lehan Hall at St. James. Right before the sold-out Connie Kaldor concert.

All Rogue Folk Club members are invited / encouraged to attend. We need to see more members than current Board members! Even if you are not a member, please come and show your support. Just don’t vote when it comes time to elect the slate of directors!

2. The Eisenhauers plus Headlong Hearts, Thursday September 11th, 8pm, at Mel Lehan Hall at St. James (3214 West 10th Avenue)

What a great way to kick off our Fall Season! This BC double bill will delight and thrill you with sumptuous original songs, sublime harmony singing, and some good ol’ foot-stomping tunes to round out the evening. Sherree Plett-Eisenhauer and her husband Jeremy used to live in East Van. They moved out to Kaslo to raise their young family and launched their self-titled debut CD at The Rogue in 2017. Like their brand new CD, Back Burner, it was recorded in Vancouver and produced by - and featured - Steve Dawson. This will be their official CD launch, and they will be backed by Steve’s regular bassist Jeremy Holmes and drummer Leon PowerJill Barber sings on it. I wonder if she will drop by…

Headlong Hearts are a five-piece band from East Vancouver, blending folk and roots music with a touch of classic and alternative rock. They craft catchy and poignant original songs, sing in stacked harmony, and weave their musical fabric on violin, banjo, mandolin, guitars, bass and drums. This fine band features former members of notable west coast acts Pure, The Paperboys, The Clumsy Lovers and Grapes of Wrath. They launched their second CD in March. Don’t miss their Rogue debut! It will be a wonderful celebration of the local music in the city’s premium venue for acoustic music.

3. Coming Soon: We are really excited about the line up of concerts this month!

Newfoundland trio The Once (Sunday September 14th) make exquisite original songs and deliver them with wonderful three-part harmonies. It’s been a long time since their last Rogue show (2018, in fact!). We saw them at Celtic Colours last October, and they sound better than ever. Click here for tickets

On Thursday September 18th Connie Kaldor returns to The Rogue for the 27th time. (In the old days she would perform 2 or 3 shows back to back. I can’t believe she's played here 26 concerts before this one!) She is at the height of her songwriting powers right now, with a new CD and two more in the pipeline. She was in magnificent form at the Folk Alliance in Montreal back in February, and she never disappoints. If you missed out on buying a ticket please purchase a Watch At Home ticket instead. You really should not miss this event!

On Friday September 19th we present some scintillating Irish trad with Tara Breen on fiddle and sax, Padraig Rynne on concertina, and Jim Murray on guitar and vocals. Tara first rocked my world when I saw her with Stockton’s Wing at the Doolin Folk Festival and later as a member of The Chieftains at Celtic Colours a decade ago. She is a superb fiddler, and also plays jigs and reels on the sax! Jim has been here many times as Sharon Shannon’s guitarist. Padraig is another brilliant musician, and this trio recently released their second CD. Click here for tickets and information

On Friday September 25th Ms. Shari Ulrich teams up with the excellent Vancouver Island quartet The Unfaithful ServantsDylan Stone (guitar and vocals) is a troubadour of the finest ilk, mandolinist Jesse Cobb is a Grammy-nominated founding member of The Infamous String Dusters, brilliant young fiddler Quin Etheridge-Pedden and bassist Mark Johnson round out this fabulous acoustic combo. They asked Shari if they could record one of her songs, and thus began a very fruitful partnership, which sees them tour BC together this month. Click here for tickets and information

We have just added a rare concert with Irish guitar wizard and singer John Doyle on Friday October 2nd. A founder member of Solas, accompanist with Liz Carroll and Karan Casey, and a member of the trio Doyle-McCusker-McGoldrick, John is not just one of Ireland’s best guitarists, he is arguably the VERY BEST. He may even host a workshop while he’s in town. Watch this space. Click here for tickets and information

4. Radio Waves

Tune in to today’s episode of the The Saturday Edge On Folk (8am to noon on www.citr.ca and fm 101.9 in Vancouver) I call it Festivals Past & Future, highlighting two of my favourite folk festivals: England’s Towersey Village Festival 1990, and Ireland’s Doolin Folk Festival 2015, plus a look ahead to this week's Tonder Festival in Denmark (where Margaret and I will witness the last ever concerts by one of our favourite bands, Oysterband, and my favourite Irish band Dervish, amongst many other fine acts - many of them Canadian!)

Apologies for the problems with last week’s radio show. CiTR had some server problems, which prevented the show from airing. Sigh. However, I have made all the past shows available on https://www.citr.ca/radio/saturday-edge/

If there are any problems with today’s show, go to Edge On August 23rd 2025 - 2025-07-28, 10.13 AM.mp3

9. Other shows around town

Panamanian Rock n Roll with Making Movies, at the WISE Hall (1882 Adanac St.) on August 26th at 8pm. This show was originally going to be at The Rickshaw.

Songbird North, Tuesday September 9th, 7:30pm, at The Roundhouse features English duo Winter Wilson, and BC songwriters Ryan McMahon and Sam Lynch joining the inimitable Ms. Shari Ulrich

The Martin Sexton Abbey Road Show, Tuesday, October 7th, 7:30 p.m. at BlueShore Financial Centre for the Performing Arts (at Capilano University, 2055 Purcell Way, N Van) Tickets $47

The American guitarist performs incredible versions of all the songs on the Beatles’ Abbey Road album before sharing a set of wide-ranging originals. A master performer, Sexton's fans include John Mayer and Dave Matthews. Reviewing the Abbey Road Show, Music Universe says, "Sexton made versatile work of his six-strings throughout the night. Opening with “Come Together,” he rattled the strings and rapped on the guitar’s body to create the iconic hook. Coupled with some mouth noises, it was as fulfilling as if a band had been behind him."
